Don Bluth is an ex-Disney animator, and when 20th Century Fox threw all the money they could at Don Bluth to create this movie it really shows. First off and foremost the animation is fucking beautiful, and I really do mean fucking beautiful. However, with that said if you watch Anastasia with an open mind as just a very fantasized retelling of the story of Anastasia, you have a pretty good film on your hands. These major players are not simply trying to copy each other anymore and are doing their own things that make them unique. Nowadays you have the Disney style, or the Dreamworks style, or the Pixar style, or the Blue Sky Studios style, etc. Before every company wanted to be like Disney and copy what Disney was doing. It's what I like so much about modern animation. It was the formula of taking a well-known story, animating it with smooth lines and colors in a very fantasy-esque style, composing grand musical numbers to add into the movie, and have your typical villain that has his own number to relish in how evil he is. It's feels a lot like The Swan Princess, The Thief and the Cobbler, The King and I, or Thumbelina where a movie tries to emulate the Disney experience and then releasing it after the start of the Renaissance (Post 1989).
Anastasia came at the tail end of the Disney Renaissance and it is quite obvious that 20th Century Fox just wanted to cash in on the sudden resurgence of Disney movies that were making a lot of profit. My biggest dislike is just how hard it tries to be a Disney film.
